‘Child sex killer’ kills himself after being tracked down 24 years on
A suspected child sex killer shot him dead after police tracked him down 24 years on from his alleged crime.
Steve Branch was found dead in his truck just half an hour after being interviewed by police over the May 1996 murder of Jessica Baggen in Sitka, Alaska.
Branch, 66, denied killing Baggen and refused to provide a DNA sample after being approached by Alaska State Troopers at his home in Austin, Arkansas, on August 3.
He fled his home shortly afterward, leaving a note for his wife that said:
Branch’s wife contacted police, who began hunting for the suspected murderer.
The suspected killer – who was a father and grandfather – was discovered dead in a wooded area shortly afterward.
A DNA sample taken from Branch after his death matched genetic material found at the scene of Jessica’s murder, with officials saying this proves Branch killed her.
