Student sentenced to 9 years in prison for rape

A student has been sent to prison for 9 years by a Lefkosa court after he was convicted of raping a female student with whom he had a drink with in his apartment in Lefkosa.

The court sitting in Lefkosa passed the judgement on Wednesday, July, 22.

The defendant, a 31-year-old student in the country was arrested in the summer of 2019 and charged with rape, a charged he denied.

According to police prosecutor in court, the defendant committed the crime on the same day he had a drink with the victim at his residence in Lefkosa.

Court president Nüvit Gazi announced the decision of the Court delegation consisting of Senior Judge Şerife Kâtip and Judge Umut Inan. 

Şerife Katip stated that the defendant battered the victim and sexually assaulted her in the bedroom of his apartment in Küçük Kaymaklı.

In his decision, he emphasized the seriousness of the crime committed and said that such crimes should be given serious deterrent.

Şerife stated that the crime committed by the accused violated another person's body immunity without her consent and that they found the accused guilty of  the crimes of 'rape, forced detention and sexual assault' brought against him.
 
The judge stated that the court haven evaluated these crimes very seriously decided to give the defendant the heaviest punishment in the criminal law.
