The TRNC will open it's borders to Turkey and South Cyprus on July 1

The TRNC will open it's borders with Turkey and South Cyprus as of July 1, said Prime Minister Ersin Tatar.

Speaking on the weekly “Basın Odası” programme on BRT on Thursday last week, Tatar said that they were working towards moving this date forward but stressed it was important to determine the conditions.

The opening of the crossing points is essential for people working in the South. There are around 1500 people who work in the south. We are aware of their situation and are not against the reopening of the crossing points. We do not want to have a different position with the president on this issue. There is no need to politicize this issue. There is still a risk as we are seeing new cases in the South, he said.

Responding to a question regarding the launch of flights from Turkey as of June 10, Tatar said those who will come in June will have to remain in quarantine for 14 days.

Those who will arrive after July 1 will not be required to stay in quarantine and will be allowed into the country with a PCR test, Tatar explained.

He said he believed the TRNC’s success in the pandemic will attract more tourists as well as ex-pats buying property in the north.

Tatar also explained they were working on introducing incentives to attract more foreigners as well as TRNC citizens residing abroad to the country.

He noted that the real-estate prices in the TRNC were attractive to foreign investors.
