Two people, one of whom terminated a 20 weeks old pregnancy and her friend who helped her has been arrested and sent to prison in north Cyprus.
According to local report, one of the suspects, a 29-year-old woman from Cameroon, who worked in a nightclub in the village of Mutluyaka reportedly terminated her 5-month-old pregnancy with the help of her friend.
The suspect is said to have ended her 20-week pregnancy by using pills in early May and were arrested early last week and taken to a court in Famagusta.
Police prosecutor from the Dörtyol Police Station stood as a witness to the report against the two women in court on the request of the suspect's friend, identified only as E.N,who worked as a consultant at the night club.
The prosecutor told the court that a taxi driver was sent to deliver 2 pills for the abortion to the suspect on May 4 which he said committed the crime of “supplying medicines for abortion”.
The prosecutor stated that, after illegally using the pills in question to terminate about 20 weeks old fetus, which she carried in her stomach, on May 5, 2020, the suspect took her phone and contacted her friend after researching how to terminate a pregnancy.
The witness police, who noted that he had examined the camera records in the night club, was able to reach the taxi driver and then to the suspects' friend.
He said investigation into the incident is still ongoing as forensic experts will carry an autopsy on the fetus including the fetus blood, urine and tissue samples which were sent to Turkey to determine the exact cause of death.
The suspects who expressed their regrets and accepted the accusations against them, demanded appropriate bail conditions from the court according to the facts.
The judge, who meticulously evaluated the issue before him, seized the passports and travel documents of both suspects.
The judge in a verdict sent the suspect's friend to prison for a period not more than 1 month under any circumstances, and released the suspect on bail with a cash deposit of 3 thousand TL.
