Series of bush fires ravages parts of North Cyprus as temperatures hits record high (photos)

Series of bush fires aided by sizzling temperatures close of 41C hit several parts of Northern Cyprus on Sunday afternoon causing severe damages.

TRNC president, Mustafa Akıncı, Prime Minister, Ersin Tatar and Foreign and Deputy Prime Minister, Kudret Özersay were at the scenes of the fire to witness it first hand.

Akıncı stated that helicopter was requested from the British High Commissioner with the initiative of the Foreign Affairs, but they were defective.

Tatar said he had contacted Turkey's vice President, Fuat Oktay to request for helicopter which will help put out the fire.

Turkey announced that it will be sending two helicopters.

Areas affected by the fire are; Tepebaşı, Gönendere, Serdarlı and Kormacit-Sadrazamköy region.

The fire started in the village of Gönendere at 11.30 am and was taken under control with cooling works still going on.

At around 12.30, another fire started on the roadside in the southern part of Serdarlı village and was extinguished by firefighters.

Olive trees, barley and many others were destroyed in the fire that affected an area of ​​approximately 300 acres.

Several roads were closed to traffic because of the fire.
