Two die in fire at the Lefkosa State Hospital in North Cyprus (photos)

At least two people were killed in a fire incident that occurred at the Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital Cardiovascular Surgery Angiography Department in Lefkosa early Friday morning.

More than 300 patients were evacuated to private hospitals and district hospitals after the fire that started at about 6:45am in the cardiovascular surgery, angio section.

According to official report on Friday morning, the reason for the fire outbreak is yet to be determined.

The incident caused panic among staffs and patients of the hospital which led to the death of two people who were being treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The only department not affected by the fire was oncology.

A 74-year-old patient Asım uygroğlu, who had been receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Service died at the Near East Hospital where he was transferred to following the fire incident.

62-year-old Erdoğan KALAYCILAR, who who was also transfered to the Near East Hospital was confirmed dead by the police.

There are allegations that the fire was caused by the explosion of an oxygen cylinder, but this information was not confirmed by authorities.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci was in the hospital to assess the situation.

The police announced that the fire was under control and the cooling works were ongoing. Special action of the police, riot police teams were deployed to the hospital, and a Crisis Desk was created in the hospital.

In a statement made by the NEU Hospital, it was stated that 42 patients, 11 of whom were babies, were evacuated to their hospitals. It was stated that the condition of patients other than the two patients who died was stable.
