EMU rectors and four Vice Rectors resigns, new Rector emerges
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector. Dr. Necdet Osam, and four Vice Rectors of the university on Thursday announced that he has resigned from his position.
Professor Dr. Necdet Osam announced his resignation by organizing a press conference with the vice rectors in the EMU Rector's meeting room on Thursday.
Vice Rectors Dr. Halil Tanju Besler, Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı, Prof. Dr. Hıfsiye Pulhan and Prof. Dr. Conclusion Zorlu Oğurlu also announced their resignation at the meeting.
Professor Dr. Necdet Osam in a statement said that relations between the EMU Foundation Board of Directors (VYK), and the Rectorate over allegations that the Rectorate dropped the number of students due to financial crisis and that it was anti-government, led to the resignation.
Professor Dr. Necdet Osam argued that following the change of government in July, 2019, following which the current Board of Foundation Managers took office, a negative perception was initiated with discourses that the rector lowered the number of students, dragged the university into a financial crisis and was anti-government.
Stating that he has been managing the university for 6 years including EMU laws and regulations, TRNC laws, collective agreements within the framework of human relations and human-oriented management, Osam stated that no coordination with the existing Foundation has been achieved.
Osam stated that they have successfully completed two thirds of the strategic plan they put forward in 2017 as the Rectorate, and EMU is a world class university in this process.
A new Rector was appointed following Osam's resignation.
Professor Doctor Hasan Demirel, Head of Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was proposed and appointed as EMU new Rector by the university senate on Thursday evening.
The university Senate, who convened extraordinarily after Osam's resignation.
In the election, Professor Doctor Hasan Demirel received 43 votes, Professor Doctor Metin Gürkanlar received 10 votes and 1 vote was empty.
