Young man dies after car plunges off cliff (photos)

The body of a young man was pulled from a car wreck on Sunday, hours after two friends had gone for a ride in rural Limassol and never answered their phones.

According to local media, a 21-year-old man was killed and another 20-year-old male seriously injured on Sunday evening in rural Limassol, when their car plunged off a cliff along the Kannavia-Kyperounta road.

Reports said police were alerted on Sunday when friends called about the two young men, who had been gone for hours and failed to answer their phones. The two friends had left a cottage in Kannavia village, Nicosia district, to head south for a visit in Kyperounta, Limassol district.

Police officers went out to search for the two men along the Ayia Irini road, when they spotted after 8pm a vehicle that fell 190 metres off a cliff in Kyperounta.

First responders rushed to the scene where they found both men outside the vehicle, about 100 metres away, while the 21-year-old front seat passenger was said to have been unresponsive. Officials said the two young men were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Fire fighters and special emergency rescuers were also called to the scene around 9:30pm and hours later the two individuals were pulled onto the cliff top and rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced the 21-year-old man dead on arrival.

The condition of the 20-year-old driver, who was said to have been responsive throughout the rescue operation, was described as critical.

Police are investigating the causes of the accident.
