Why are old students required to do another lab test when processing their Muhaceret (resident permit)
Conducting a lab test every year when renewing Muhaceret (resident permit) in north Cyprus should be reconsidered.
When one come into a new country either as a student, worker, visitor or tourist, he or she is expected to make his or her stay legal by obtaining the necessary documentation which allows them to stay and move freely and there is a process that one must go through.
In north Cyprus, all those who came into the country as students are required to complete their registration and then proceed to obtain their student resident permit.
As the new practice entails, one has to register their information with the immigration online, creating a profile of themselves with the immigration and then required to pay for a lab test online.
During the launch of the new online system in 2018, students were given the opportunity to indicate whether they have paid their health insurance to the university. This option reduces the fee the applicant is expected to pay to 135 Turkish Lira. But as time went on, the option was taken away without a proper explanation from the authority or universities which now put the fee at 475 TL.
Seeking information on this issue, we stumbled on unconfirmed information that the issue of health insurance caused a disagreement between the universities and the authority as some universities were unable to communicate with the authority, the number of students who actually paid the money to them.
So the government decided that all applicants should pay their health insurance directly to the government instead of them, (the government) getting it from the universities.
The bone of contention now is that; are these universities not supposed to remove this fee from school fees?
The fees have remained the same and students are now made to pay a whooping 475 TL for health insurance and lab test when processing their resident permit.
The second point on this issue is why are those who went through the process of carrying out lab test made to do so again when they want to renew their permit?
The option of another lab test should have been scrapped for all those who did it the previous year. The Ministry of Health still have the lab results of all those who did their test last year and this year so there should be an exception for old students expect those who have not gone through the new process.
