Migrant workers ignored in Cyprus, poor working condition and denied legal rights and benefits

Hundreds of foreign workers arriving in North Cyprus from about thousands of kilometers away are the victims of labor exploitation, as they try to look after a sick family, send bread back home, and sometimes to send their children to school.

Many of them are not aware of their legal rights, or because they are foreigners in the country, benefits due to them are not known.

They cannot object to staying in unhealthy conditions and they are employed in hazardous environments where no security measures have been taken.

This can sometimes have very cruel results. The biggest example of this is the fact that a large proportion of people who died in work accidents are workers from abroad.

9 fatal accidents involving foreign workers occurred in the country in 2018 while in the first 4 months of 2019, the deaths of four foreigners and fatal work accidents involving 5 has been recorded.

The story of a Vietnam woman, who was found dead at the Ercan airport road in Lefkosa in February, 15 months after she went missing is an example of how much migrant workers who left their family to come work in the country are ignored.
