Dolphin found dead from waste washed up on the Çatalköy coast, north Cyprus

A DOLPHIN found washed up on the Çatalköy coastline had a stomach full of debris including plastic and fishing line which was believed to have led to it being infested by parasites.

The find on Sunday came as studies show bumper dolphin numbers in the island's waters this year and produce extensive records of marine bycatch for a Mediterranean-wide project.

The 2.6-metre-long corpse of an adult male bottlenose dolphin was discovered by a member of the public who reported it to the Taşkent Nature Park Wildlife Support Line, on 1190.

A similar stranding was reported in March 2017 at Çatalköy's Shayna Beach and was buried by the local municipality without the animals' body being examined.
