Barriers on mobile phone use across the Cyprus island to be removed by June

The barriers to the use of mobile phones throughout the island were removed after a secret meeting at the Presidential Palace in South Cyprus.

This means that mobile telephone roaming should come into service across the island by the end of June, according to a report by Greek Cypriot daily ‘Politis’.

Telsim and Turkcell in the north and Cyta and MTN companies in the south will be ready to provide a connection service to subscribers, within a few weeks.

Stating that technical and other obstacles on the issue of roaming were overcome and mobile phone connections were possible as of the end of June, the newspaper confirmed that both the TRNC and Greek Cypriot political circles confirmed that the four companies would make a separate agreement with a telecommunication centre in Switzerland in order to implement roaming.

According to the report, the service providers, Cyta and MTN in the south, referred to the South Cyprus Legal Department’s 2015 opinion and asked for confirmation from Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades that the legal department would not initiate criminal proceedings if they cooperated with companies in the north.

About a month ago, a secret meeting was held at the Presidential Palace and the companies’ recent worries and fears were also addressed. Greek Cypriot daily ‘Phileleftheros’ wrote that the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus and the Chief of the Peacekeeping Mission, Elizabeth Spehar, met with Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades yesterday, following a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı on 7 May.
