Turkish Cypriots hold protests and strikeover price hikes
Three trade unions will on Friday go on strike in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus in protest against rising prices.
According to media report, KTAMS, Kamu Is and Kamu Sen are calling on the public to join the protest.
A packet of cigarettes is sold for 2 Turkish Lira (33 cent of a euro) in north Cyprus matching an increase implemented in Turkey on April 6.
At the same time five municipalities have announced a hike in the price of water supplied to households from wells. That increase is up to 3 Turkish Lira (50 cent of a euro)per ton.
The latest increases come on the back of costlier electricity and fuel.
Meanwhile, bus drivers staged a protest in Famagusta on Wednesday, tying up their buses with rope in protest at not having received an increase in subsidies to transport pupils and students.
