Turkish Cypriot man threatens to burn himself in an apartment rooftop in south Cyprus

A 41-year-old Turkish Cypriot man climbed on to the roof of a house in Larnaca’s Ayios Ioannis area, south Cyprus, for almost five hours on Thursday and threatened to set himself on fire over an eviction.

According to the report by philenews the man, a father of four children, climbed to the roof of a building after police tried to evict his family on Thursday morning holding a container which he claims contains gasoline.

The man went up on the roof of the house at around 10 am threatening to set himself on fire if authorities evicted his family after members of the Larnaca district administration went earlier in the day accompanied by police officers to execute an eviction order.

Police negotiators managed to convince the man to come down at around 2.30pm.

During the incident, his wife and children were reportedly locked up in the house.

The man and his family reportedly started occupying the house illegally  in November 2018.  The house belongs to a Turkish Cypriot family and is managed by the custodian for Turkish Cypriot property, which is under the Cyprus Interior Ministry.

According to an Interior Ministry announcement issued on Tuesday, authorities tried to evict the family before as the property was meant to house a refugee family who applied for housing help.

The Ministry said that “considering the humanitarian aspect of the case, as it involved a family with many children, we did not directly repossess the property but tried to resolve the issue in a consensual manner, by finding another property to house the family”.

Among the proposed solutions, was housing the family temporarily in a hotel or in rented accommodation until a permanent solution would is found.

However, these options were not accepted by the family who gave “various excuses,” the Ministry said. Thus, the Ministry announced it would evict the family.

Under current law, property belonging to Turkish Cypriots permanently resident in the Turkish-occupied north is managed by the custodian of Turkish Cypriot properties which is under the Interior Ministry. Properties are rented by the Custodian, with priority going to refugees.
