‘Car-free town’ experiment in Girne
Part of Girne “high street” was closed to
traffic on Friday last week and for the rest of the weekend, in the first stage
of a month-long “car-free town” experiment.
The “trial run” sees the top end of Ziya Rızkı Caddesi, between the roundabout at Ramadan Cemil Square and the crossroads beside Reşat jeweller's, closed to vehicles from 4.30pm on Fridays until 6am on Mondays.
Drivers entering the town centre were urged to follow signs, while businesses have a 6am-to-10am “window” for deliveries on Saturdays and Sundays.
Mayor Nidai Güngördü, who called to oversee the closure, said the aim was to make the centre “an area of great attraction to visitors, with the shops alongside cafés, restaurants and bars”.
