Human Rights Association calls on UN to recognize TRNC

The President of the TRNC Human Rights Association, Hasan Yılmaz Işık, has called on the United Nations (UN) to recognize the TRNC.

Işık made the call at a press conference held on Monday 10 December, a day to mark World Human Rights Day.

The Turkish Cypriot people should not be left alone with their fate and without human rights, he said.

Citing Kosovo as a case, who gained recognition by the UN few years ago, he urged the UN to also use the European Union criteria available for the recognition of the TRNC.

He stated that Greek Cypriots continue to usurp the rights of Turkish Cypriots' which according to him, threaten human rights and peace.

He criticized the UN in his speech, and said the UN was indifferent to these initiatives by the Greek Cypriots and said the UN cannot give any confidence to any agreement.

He noted that the two peoples can be made possible by the adoption of two states on the basis of the political equality accepted by the UN in the solution and peace in Cyprus and calls on the UN to do its duty and to recognize the TRNC.
