Amnesty (Amendment Bill) for Foreigners and Immigrants adopted unanimously by the TRNC Assembly, wait for president's approval

The TRNC General Assembly on Monday discussed a draft Law on amnesty for Foreigners and Immigrants (Amendment) (YTNo: 62/2/2018) and a draft report of the Committee on Law, Political Affairs and Foreign Affairs.

A member of the Assembly, Nazım Çavuşoğlu argued that consecutive amnesties harmed the seriousness of the state and that the laws had been rendered inoperable.

Çavuşoğlu, who criticized the rolling out of amnesty year after year, said after this, no serious thing is done by the state noting that the current bill was not enough to solve the unregistered people in the country.

According to him, his wish was to end these amnesties, and that this should be done in order to eliminate unregistered workers that create an amnesty environment.

Another member of the Assembly who spoke on the issue noted the importance of the law and said that special applications related to the marriages of TRNC citizens and those born in TRNC should be determined under the law.

He also criticized police treatment of foreign students stating that students want comfort and peace in the places they came to and want the issue to be given importance.

UBP deputy Zorlu Töre said that the issue could not be solved in a fundamental way even if amnesty was issued every few years.

After much deliberations the Law on Foreigners and Immigration (Amendment) was adopted unanimously.

The law will now go the president for approval.
