We condemn military/police HARASSMENT of international students in TRNC
There
is a thin line between the police doing its job - the maintenance of
peace, security, and order- and the harassment of citizens and
international students.
While we do not in any way want to prevent the police from doing its job, we also cannot accept or tolerate the abuse of power, particularly when said abuse of power infringes upon basic human values and rights.
As such VOIS Cyprus vehemently continues to oppose the abuse of our basic rights as human beings, in this very crucial point in humankind, where we seek a better world in which humans are treated in fairness and equity.
We call on the TRNC authorities to put an end to these human rights violations, and we call on the people of the TRNC to join us international students, in saying "No" to abuse of power, and "Yes" to respect for Human Rights.
We must remember that to stay silent in the time of abuse, is to enable and participate in it. Abuse is a cycle, and inaction towards it today would only have subsequent consequences where it might be you tomorrow, in the shoes of the abused.
We appreciate all locals who have spoken up against these violations, and we urge international students to continue to play a positive role in adhering to laid down rules and regulations. Do not be the 'justification' for the violation of your human dignity and respect, in any way.
