US first lady, Melania Trump branded racist by Nigeria's Chimamanda Adichie
Adichie spoke out at an event with the magazine. The writer revealed her thoughts on the First Lady, after being asked:
Do you think Melania Trump’s a racist?
She said:
Had you asked me this question yesterday, I would have said ‘yes’ and my evidence would be that she supported her husband when he was being incredibly racist about Barack Obama.
She referenced when Donald Trump asked Barack Obama to reveal his birth certificate to the public, because he doubted that he was born in the United States.
The writer said:
It was about race. It was racist and she supported him.
She went on to discuss an interview Melania gave while in Africa recently.
She sort of stepped out of a colonial 1750 guidebook about how to be in Africa. There’s a pith helmet and then I am thinking maybe this is supposed to be ironic? Maybe it is a critique of colonialism.
She really thought this is what you do when you go to Africa and it says something about someone who is so removed from reality, Adichie said.
