Nigerian escape in handcuff while in custody at crossing point with south Cyprus, officer suspended

Greek Cypriot police are looking for a 26 year old Nigerian who escaped a police check point just after he was arrested on suspicion of trying to enter south Cyprus illegally through the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint.

The 26 year old was in the back seat of a car driven by a 30-year-old Greek Cypriot man who had crossed into south Cyprus from north Cyprus on Wednesday afternoon.

Both men were arrested for illegal entry and facilitating illegal entry, but the Nigerian managed to escape in handcuffs while in custody at the border crossing.

Following the incident, a Greek Cypriot police officer who was involved in the arrest has been suspended and will be investigated in connection with the incident.
