Greek Cypriot farmers clash with Turkish soldiers

There was tension in the Nicosia/Lefkosa buffer zone on Saturday between Greek Cypriot farmers and Turkish soldiers.

According to report by Greek Cypriot daily, Philenews, the incident occurred near SOPAZ. About ten armed Turkish soldiers appeared while four Greek Cypriots were working in the field.

UNFICYP warned the farmers to stop what they were doing and leave immediately.

Although the area belongs to South Cyprus and farmers are permitted to cultivate the land, at the same time, UNFICYP has urged Greek Cypriot farmers to stay 200 metres away from the Turkish sentry posts.

Farmers told the site that their work was being repeatedly interrupted by Turkish soldiers.
