A Lefkosa court throws out Levent case against Erdogan

A Lefkosa court, North Cyprus has thrown out a case filed by Sener Levent and Afrika newspaper against Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, for instigating attacks on the newspaper’s offices on January 22, 2018.

According report, the court said there was not sufficient testimony and evidence to bring a case against Erdogan. 

The case was also dismissed on the grounds that the presidents of foreign states are exempt from being sued.

Afrika’s offices were attacked, and a case opened against publisher Levent, Afrika and one of its journalists, after the paper on January 21, ran with the title “Yet another invasion by Turkey”, in relation to the Turkish military operation in Syria’s Afrin.

Erdogan had called the paper “lousy” and said they had run with an unethical title that day.  He called on “his brothers” in the north to take a stand, the newspaper said.

The next day a mob showed up at Afrika’s offices making the symbol of the Turkish ultranationalist movement ‘Grey Wolves’ and the symbol of the ‘Rabia’, a gesture used to show support for the Muslim Brotherhood.
