Woman sues ex-boss for telling her to wear bra at work!

A waitress is suing her former boss for a breach of human rights after he said she must wear a bra at work.

Christine Schell, 25, hasn’t worn a bra for three years for comfort and health reasons.

When she started working at Greenside Grill in the Osoyoos Golf Club in British Columbia, Canada, in June this year, customers complained about her being braless – prompting management to introduce a new dress code.

The code stated that ‘women must wear either a tank top or bra under their uniform shirt’.

Ms Schell refused to sign and was subsequently fired, she claims.
She said she feels like she was forced out for refusing to go along with what she views as a sexist set of rules.

Speaking to Global News she said:

I don’t think any other human being should be able to dictate another person’s undergarments.

Ms Schell said she doesn’t want to work at the golf course again, but wants people to know about her case.

These things happen and these things aren’t right, she said.

Employment lawyer David Brown said dress codes that apply different rules for different genders could be viewed as discriminatory under the British Colombia Human Rights Code.

It’s an interesting question as to whether or not an employer can dictate the underwear that women can wear, but they don’t say anything about the underwear that men can wear, and does that create an adverse impact on the individual?, he said.

Ms Schell’s former boss Doug Ross refused to comment, citing employee confidentiality.
