Two students sentenced to 5-years in prison for drug crimes
Two students, accused of smuggling drug from south Cyprus into north Cyprus has been jailed for 5 years each while a third was released on probation.
The accused persons, Lisa Mupanguri, Matengu and Anton Namibian, were given the lengthy prison sentence by a Lefkosa court on Saturday while and Shilao Wesley Mogano was released on probation.
Lisa Mupanguri, was accused of entering south Cyprus and then importing 196 grams of banned substance at five different dates within a month. Matengu Anton Namibian was also accused of received illegal drugs brought in from south Cyprus.
Shilao Wesley Mogano, was accused of purchasing 5 grams of banned drugs from Matengu Anton Namibian.
Lisa Mupanguri, a student at one of the universities in Lefkosa was arrested with 28 grams of banned substance in December, 2017 after crossing into north Cyprus from the Ledra Palace Border Gate with south Cyprus.
He confessed to police at the time of his arrest that he was doing drug smuggling in other to pay for his fees and rent on his landlord's guidance.
Mupanguri was reported to have brought 196 grams of hinoki-type drugs from south to north at five different dates within a month, and then delivered some to Matengu Anton Namibian.
Lisa on her part, paid 700 euros to Matengu for 56 grams of drugs on November 30, 2017, 70 euros for 56 grams on December 7, 350 euros for 28 grams on December 15, and 350 euros for 28 grams on December 20.
Mupanguri was found to have received 50 euros each time.
The three accused were taken to a Lefkosa court on charges of "illegally importing, exporting and saving drugs" which they accepted.
The judge noted that drug offenses are a common and increasingly common crime among young people and threatens especially young people in the country.
He emphasized that drug offenses are a type of crime that basically shakes society's health and forms a step in the execution of other crimes.
The judge said that the subjects should be punished in order to protect public interest against such crimes.
The judge noted that the accused, Lisa Mupanguri, was trained in the south and that he had begun a courier service with the offer of the landlord to pay his house rent and that he had imported the drug from the south and handed it over to accused Matengu Anton Namibian.
Referring to all the pros and cons of the defendants, the judge unanimously declared that Lisa Mupanguri and Matengu Anton Namibian be sentenced to 5 years in prison.
The judge explained that Shilao Wesley Mogano, who bought 5 grams of Indian hem from Matengu Anton Namibian, will take advantage of the Supervised Freedom Act.
