The abandoned Lefkosa - Güzelyurt highway in Gonyeli - Business owners want the project canceled

The new underground bypass project across the Lefkosa - Güzelyurt highway in Gonyeli has been abandoned for three months now due to a court injunction after residents and business owners filed for it's cancellation.

The subway project that connects Gönyeli and Yenikent has been abandoned since June after work reached an advanced stage.

The project was abandoned because of an interim decision by a court, but since there is no informative information on this issue, many people were left in the dark as to why the project was abandoned halfway.

Because the courts have been on holiday in the last two months, the case could not be discussed but since the holiday will end on September 16, it will become clear what will become of the project.

People traveling to Guzelyurt are facing difficulties trying to by-pass the bridge and faces lots of traffic on the roads.

Residents are also complaining about the dust caused by the project.

The case had been lodged in court three months ago and the project had received an interim order from the court during the same period said a lawyer.

Business owners in the area who filed the case in court complain that the project has slowed business down for them describing the concrete wall of the bridge a 'Berlin Wall'.

They want the court to cancel the project.

They accused the Gonyeli munipality for carrying out the subway project without consulting the residents and doing proper planning.
