Blockage of the Lefkosa Terminal road enters day 3 as livestock breeders and farmers continue their protest against the poor economy
Since the last three day, the Turkish Cypriot livestock breeders and farmers association has continued to block major roads in Lefkosa including the busy terminal road with tractors and heavy duty vehicles as motorists now taking alternative routes to their destination.
According to the association, the blockade will continue until Monday next week if the government refuse to meet their demands.
Riot police on Friday intervened with tear gas as the protest became violent with some protesters attempting to cross to South Cyprus.
Meanwhile, the TRNC President, Mustafa Akıncı on Friday met with a delegation of five members of the Animal Husbandry Union headed by union leader to discuss the way forward after series of meetings with several ministry officials prove fruitless.
The farmers are protesting against the effects of the devaluation of the Turkish lira on their sector. They say that they are facing ruin because of the rise in prices of animal feed and insufficient government subsidies.
Children have taken advantage of the situation by playing football on the streets.
