Trump orders Secretary of States to look into South Africa's land seizure from white minority
US president Donald Trump has ordered his
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to “closely study” the South African
government’s land seizures from white farmers, also claiming white farmers had been killed in their masses.
He was reacting to a segment on Fox News reporting on moves by South Africa’s government to begin the process of unilaterally seizing farms after negotiations with the owners to buy the properties stalled.
No deaths have been reported since the law came into effect, though vengeance violence was reported in previous years.I have asked Secretary of State @SecPompeo to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large scale killing of farmers. “South African Government is now seizing land from white farmers.” @TuckerCarlson @FoxNews— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 23, 2018
In 2017-18, 47 farmers were killed, according to statistics compiled by AgriSA, with an increasing rise on the number of attacks on farms.
However, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hit back at Trump's comments, insisting the US president was "misinformed" about the situation in South Africa.
The presidency has noted Trump's tweet, which is misinformed in our view. We will take up the matter through diplomatic channels, he said.
The government on Wednesday said Trump sought to "divide" South Africa and bring it back to its "colonial" rule.
