Police officer jailed for 20 days for beating his wife in North Cyprus
A police officer has been sentenced to 20 days in prison for beating and injuring his wife in their home in Famagusta.
The police officer identified as Volkan Ataklı, was given the 20 days prison sentence by a Famagusta court on Thursday.
The judge said the father of two was found guilty and convicted in the light of the testimony brought before the court.
According to the court judge, the accused was sentenced to 20 days imprisonment for causing his wife bodily harm after throwing pomegranate on her head.
The judge underlined that there is a serious increase in cases of violence against women in the country some of which were never reported.
The judge noted that the defendant is someone who is a police officer, therefore, it is not acceptable for a police officer who is in charge of ensuring public safety to exhibit such behavior in his or her own family home.
The judge, said that the 20 days in prison was the most appropriate punishment to be given to the defendant.
