Paper Round: Man Utd special - Maguire, Varane and Mourinho's future...
After the closure of the transfer window
for Premier League clubs we take a look at Manchester United in a Paper
Round special...
Mourinho furious and concerned after transfer inactivity
The Mail come with a story that says that
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is both furious and concerned
following the club's failure to add another player on transfer deadline
day. Mourinho is upset that he wasn't backed by the board and is
concerned that history could repeat itself after a similarly poor window
in his last summer as Chelsea manager.
Mourinho frustrated by defensive decisions
The Telegraph report that whilst Manchester United were prepared to spend a world record fee on a player like Raphael Varane, they weren't convinced about some of the other players Mourinho wanted. Varane was never available but Woodward didn't feel Toby Alderweireld or Harry Maguire represented long-term value.
Man Utd want to emulate Man City...
The Mirror report that part of United's frustration is Mourinho's lack of
desire to work with what he has or think about the club's future, a
stark contrast to the strategy at rivals Manchester City. They are aware of Mourinho's propensity for short stays but that contradicts the long-term plans the club wants to implement.
Man Utd turned down chance to sign Maguire for £15m
A story from the Telegraph says that last summer Manchester United turned down the chance to sign
Harry Maguire for £15 million. Maguire was quoted at that fee when
United asked Hull about him but they decided to go for Victor Lindelof instead having also looked at Michael Keane.
