Girne American University ‘will only pay student and staff rents in TL’ - GAU Rector

The Rector of the Girne American University (GAU), has called on landlords to collect rents in Turkish Lira stating that landlords have been told that rents paid by GAU for student and staff accommodation will now be in Turkish lira and not in foreign currency or based on their soaring values.

Announcing the policy decision, Serhat Akpınar urged other organisations and individuals to also stop using hard currencies, either directly or as a “benchmark” for TL payments, to help avoid “bad consequences” for the TRNC.

I am politely telling landlords not to expect payment from us in anything other than the official national currency and that they are free to seek legal advice on the issue if they wish, he said.
