Economic crisis hits Turkish Cypriot hard in low key Bayram celebration
Even the middle class in the Turkish Cypriot community
have found it impossible to travel abroad during Kurban Bayram, because
of the devaluation of the Turkish lira and the successive price
increases.
This has affected the number of travellers during the 9-day vacation for the Feast of Sacrifice, which according to travel agents, was the period during which they were selling the most packages for travelling abroad in the past.
Noting that people now preferred to spend their holidays at home, Havadis newspaper reports that even some existing holiday reservations had been cancelled.
Furthermore, according to Havadis, the streets in North Nicosia were empty on Tuesday. It was a quiet day at the border crossings as well, because people preferred to stay at home and did not cross over to the south, as they usually did during the holidays.
