A woman scaled the Statue of Liberty and forcing its evacuation on US Independence Day to stage a dramatic protest against President
Donald Trump’s separation of migrant families.
The woman, Therese Okoumou wearing a “Rise and Resist” T-shirt, told police she was
protesting the separation of immigrant children from parents who cross
the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.
She said she would only come down when parents are reunited with
all migrant children separated from them by the Trump administration.
“She resisted at the beginning. She would not come down by voice command,” National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis said.
The incident forced park officials to evacuate the island of tourists Wednesday July 4th.
The NYPD's emergency service unit had used a ladder to reach the climber who made it to the base of Lady Liberty's feet.
She was arrested and held in custody.
