Student arrested and sent to prison for gambling

A university student has been arrested for betting following a raid by the TRNC Financial Crime fighters in Girne.

The raid operation was launched to apprehend betting gangs in the area.

According to the police, virtual betting and gambling on the internet is illegal in the country.

A 26-year-old suspect, and a university student, identified as Semih Durukan was arrested in the raid on Sunday on grounds that he played illegal virtual bet in Girne.

Police said bank and credit cards details carrying different surnames, 733 different sim cards and a laptop computer was found on him in the operation.

He was taken to a court in Girne where he was ordered to remain in police custody for three days.
