Police opens investigation into allegations of torture by police in a Girne prison

The police Directorate in Girne has opened investigation into allegations of torture at the Lapta Police Station.

In a written statement made by the General Directorate of Police Press Office on Monday, it was noted that both the administrative and criminal investigations were initiated by the Supervisory Board attached to the Chief Public Prosecutor and General Directorate of Police on the allegations that one Fevzi Karip was treated violently in Lapta prison.

Within the scope of the investigation, it has been stated that if the crime is detected, necessary legal action will be taken against the members of the police who committed the crime.

Fevzi Karip, 32, who was taken to the Lapta Police Station after a fight on the beach, claimed that the police had been treating him in a fuzzy way:

Me, beaten, left to die," he said.

Fevzi Karip had went to the beach in Alsancak last week Saturday where he was arrested and taken into custody under investigation for a fight despite the fact that he was injured and bleeding before he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to report, Fevzi Karip had objected to his arrest at the Lapta Police Headquarters where he was taken, and the police showed resistance. Karip was removed from the police station by his lawyer four hours after he was arrested.

Fevzi Karip, at the Lapta Police Station, claimed that two policemen disastrously tortured him.

I was handcuffed to the cell, he said.
I was beaten by two cops for a few moments. I stayed in the blood, in the cell, for about 4 hours.

His mother Ayse Dilek, who found her son in the hospital unrecognizable, almost went crazy. She reported the matter to the Lapta Police Station on the day of the incident.

Her mother said he suffered a brain trauma due to the punctures he received.

Speaking to Turkish Cypriot daily, Havadis about the incident, he said some people on the beach were discussing and the police were called to the scene.

I was sitting at the beach bar, where the police came and put me in the police car without asking me. On my way to the road, they told me that I should not talk. When I asked the police again, the police handcuffed me from behind, pushed me into the police cell without letting me speak. Two policemen have turned my face to the wall and started to beat me.
Two policemen did this to me, I will never forget the face of the two, I remember the name of one of the policemen who beat me, MSY, but I only remember the other's last name, but I can detect it. My hands were handcuffed from behind and made me do this and I begged to go to the hospital for 3-4 hours. I was left with my wound and blood in the cell for about 4 hours.
