Malawi student arrested for residing in the TRNC without a resident permit

A Malawi student at the Eastern Mediterranean University, EMU has been arrested and detained for illegally residing in the TRNC after the expiration of his student visa.

According to report, the student identified only as K.F.M, was arrested on Friday in Famagusta on the ground that his student visa has expired because he did not renew his studentship with EMU.

He was taken to a court in Famagusta on charges of "unauthorized residence in the TRNC". 

According to police report, the student registered with EMU on February 15th, 2017 but failed to renew his school record following which his student visa expired leading to him residing in the TRNC without a resident permit.  

He was ordered to remain in detention for 3 days by the court.
