France win 2018 Worldcup
France on Sunday evening beat Croatia 4-2 to lift the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, just 20 years after they hosted and won the tournament...
After 32 days, 63 games in Russia, France won the World Cup for the second since time France 98 by ending battling Croatia’s dream of a first title with a 4-2 victory on Sunday in one of the most entertaining and action-packed finals for decades.
France have won all their games within the 90 minutes except for a dull 0-0 draw with Denmark in their final group game, where they were already guaranteed as winners. They then went on to beat Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium to reach their first final since 2006.
Croatia on the other hand have had a far rockier road to the final since finishing Group D with a 100 per cent record. They were taken to penalties by Denmark and Russia before needing an extra-time winner to beat England.
Both teams were unchanged from their semifinal wins, with Croatia having needed extra time (and penalties twice) through the knockout stages to reach the final.
In a match that featured anything you could have ever imagined an own goal, a goalkeeper gaffe, pitch invaders and a teenager wunderkind finding the back of the net.
The victory means that Didier Deschamps, captain of the 1998 side, becomes the third man to win the World Cup as player and coach after Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.
Croatia’s Luka Modric won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player ahead of Belgium skipper Eden Hazard and France forward Antoine Griezmann.
