Driver who was arrested for bribing police during a traffic search in Güzelyurt denies charges

He was arrested on Thursday in Güzelyurt for offering bribe to a police officer during a traffic check. He denied in court that he offered bribe to the police but was only trying to pay for his punishment.

The accused, John Özdilaver, 34 was arrested on Friday on accusation of offering bribes to police during traffic control on Kutlu Adalı Boulevard in Güzelyurt.

Police had accused him of using a Ford Fiesta brand vehicle without plate number, uninsured and without navigation.

He was taken to a court in Lefkosa on charges of bribing police officers who stopped him during a traffic check, an accusation he denied.

Police told the court that the accused gave the police officer on duty a bribe saying "Take this 100 dollars and let me go to Girne." 

Police said the suspect was arrested and the 100 USD banknote taken as evidence.

Speaking at the court, the accused, John Ozdilaver, 

I did not intend to bribe the police. I gave the money for penalty. I wanted to pay the bills.
It can be paid at the moment of punishment in England, he added.

He was released on bail and to appear in court on a later date.
