Sole survivor of plane crash captured on video escaping wreckage

The sole survivor of a light plane crash has been captured on video emerging from the burning wreckage which contained the bodies of his dead parents inside.

Pilot Greg Boaz, 54, his wife Julie, 48 and son Peyton, 17, were travelling in a small plane from Memphis in the US when it crashed in Detroit’s east side Sunday night.

Peyton escaped from the deadly crash but sustained third-degree burns and is in critical condition at a Detroit hospital. Footage of the incident filmed by a witness shows Peyton crawling out of the plane and running away as it becomes engulfed in flames. A witness helped save Peyton from the wreckage, using an axe to put a hole in the plane which he was able to escape from, local media reported.

Air safety investigator Andrew Todd Fox said Monday that a conclusive cause had not yet been determined.

Mr Fox said the single-engine Cessna fuelled up Sunday afternoon in West Memphis, Arkansas. The plane was cleared to land Sunday night at a small municipal airport on Detroit’s eastside when the pilot reported one landing gear was not extended.

According to the Mr Fox, the plane then flew by the tower, and the controller confirmed that the landing gear was not down.

Mr Fox said the pilot then circled back to the airport before telling the control tower he was either “low on fuel or out of fuel.” The pilot then asked for an area to land on the airport property and that was the last communication with air traffic control. The plane struck trees and a power line as it crashed and caught fire.

Peyton’s best friend, Sophie Nilssen, took to social media to ask friends and family to pray for his recovery.

Keep Peyton Boaz and his family in your thoughts and prayers or prayer equivalents, she wrote.
He is a bright light in a dark world, he’s stood by me through every bad decision and stupid mistake, I can’t remember life without him. He is family.

Danny Boaz, Greg’s cousin, told 7 Action News that Greg had been flying for years, but hadn’t flown in the last decade. Danny said Greg bought the plane last week and that they were heading to Detroit for Greg’s daughter’s volleyball competition.

I was asking if he flies anymore, he said ‘no.’ Danny said.
He was thinking about getting back into it. I really believe that the conversation kind of peaked his interest in flying again.
