Police warns of fake bank notes in circulation

The TRNC police have issued a warning to the general public about some counterfeit 200 and 100 TL note currently in circulation.

According to police, the said 200 and 100 TL counterfeit banknotes were used to purchase goods in markets in Famagusta on Friday and Saturday.

Police in a press release listed the serial numbers of the counterfeit 200 TL banknotes as follows; -D 252736815, D 252 736850, D 252 736855, D 252 736851, D 252 736856, D 252736817, C 411840511, C 411848519, C 411881552 , and the counterfeit 100 TL banknotes as; C 885532721, C 885 542 731 and C 885 556 745.

Police in a statement said the fake notes were used by two persons who went to two different markets in Gazimağusa on Friday and Saturday to spend the banknotes.

An investigation carried out by the police revealed that the counterfeit banknotes have been used in two different places in Gazimağusa and three people were arrested for the incident.

According to police, a total of 3 counterfeit 200 TL banknotes were used to pay for goods purchased by two of the suspects, a 17-year-old and a 33-year-old in Lemar on Friday June 22 and at Önder Mall on Saturday June 23.

Also six 200 TL and three 100 TL counterfeit banknotes were seized in a search carried out at the residence and places where the accused persons were staying.

A third person A.A, 38 was also arrested, believing he has a connection to the other accused persons.

The police warns the general public, banks, foreign exchange companies, financial institutions, markets and citizens who may have come in contact with anyone possessing the 200 and 100 "Turkish Lira" bank notes to report them to the police.
