Nigerian student sentenced to 4 months in prison, Judge laments serious increase drug crime

A Nigerian student has been sentenced to four months in prison by a Famagusta criminal court for drug crimes.

The student identified as B.S and has been living in the TRNC since 2016 was arrested with 81 milligrams of drug said police report.

He was found guilty of taking and saving drugs by the court on Wednesday.

The court judge noted that the crime was punishable under the law with up to 20 years imprisonment and that drug crimes has increased considerably in the country.

According to the judge, annual reports on crimes in the country, claims that in 2017, the drug crime occupied most of the court agenda adding that "the increase in drug crimes has reached a serious stage."

He further noted that public interest in serious and grave crimes that disturbed public well-being and public health should be kept in the past and that punishment and serious punishment should be given to those who committed the offenses and to those who assist offenders.

The judge explained that they were appropriate and fair to punish him with a prison sentence by consensus, and sentenced him to 4 months in prison.
