Local elections to be held in TRNC today

Local elections will be in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Today.

According to a report by state media, BRTK, a total of 191,153 registered voters will be voting at 734 ballot stations set up across the country to elect new mayors, municipal assemblies, muhktars and other local administration officials.

Sunday's local elections, which coincide with the presidential elections in Turkey, will be the 11th time Turkish Cypriots will be holding municipal elections since 1974.

There are a total of 111 candidates contesting for the post of mayor in the 28 municipalities a reasonable number as independent candidates who have distanced themselves from their traditional affiliations with political parties.

208 municipal assembly members will be elected out of 1092 candidates and 184 muhktars from the 184 candidates.

Mayors and municipal assemblies serve a term of four years.

A number of muhktars have already been declared elected due to the fact that there were no other candidates running for the posts.
