Kennedy Taomwabwa Dede - Suspects brought to court after three months

Five young students who were arrested and detained for kidnapping and murdering Nigerian student Kennedy Taomwabwa Dede in January were brought to court on Friday since they were sentenced to three month imprisonment in March. 

Kennedy Taomwabwa Dede, 28, an Architecture student at the Eastern Mediterranean University , EMU, in Famagusta was kidnapped and beaten by 7 people on Monday, January, 29 and then taken to the Çanakkale lake where he was killed.

Following his murder, seven suspects namely; Ozan Korkurt, 18, Zekeriya Kurucu, 22, Burcu Çelik, 16, Onur Körkurt, 21, Simge Dağdur, 28, Aydan Sel and Nidai Şanlı, 28 were arraigned before a Famagusta court on the charges of murder, human abduction and serious assault.

Two of the accused Burcu Çelik, 16 and Aydan Sel who were convicted of "covering the crime" were discharged on bail in March for lack of evidence against them that they were involved in the killing will be prosecuted  for "a serious crime prevention negligence".

The other five Nidai Şanlı, Ozan Körkurt, Onur Körkurt, SD and Zekeriya Kurucu (22), who were ordered to three months in prison at the Lefkosa Central prison were taken to a Famagusta Court for hearing on Friday amid tight security.

Relatives of the accused were also in court and showed their anger towards one of the suspect Nidai Şanlı for his role in the murder incident.

Case files containing the crime investigation were brought to court for first hearing since the completion of investigation.

Some lawyers representing the accused demanded time from the court to meet with the prosecutor's office, declaring that they were newly authorized on the case.

The judge dismissed their plea and adjourned the case until June 14, 2018 and ordered the continued detention of the suspects.

The police then took Nidai Sanli to prison separately from other suspects.
