Five people were affected by smoke that emanated from a fire that broke out of a student dormitory in Lefkosa on Saturday.

The Karaca building at the Bedrettin Demirel Street in Lefkosa, the premium park student hostel accommodating about 160 students caught fire at about 5:00am on Saturday morning.

According to report, the fire broke out when a pharmacy student living in room 206 was reading with a glass alcohol lamp which then dropped on her suitcase igniting a fire.

Another student living in the building is said to have ran out of the building in a towel screaming for help, report Turkish Cypriot daily, Kibris.

The daily also reported that other students who were sleeping in the dormitory at the time of the incident suffered fear and shock.

Students were seen running into the street for safety.

The fire was extinguished by fire crews who intervened quickly.

The fire is said to have damaged an air conditioner of the dormitory room, the floor, the door and the corridor.

No one was injured in the incident.

The five residents affected by the smoke were taken to the Lefkosa Burhan NalbantoÄŸlu State Hospital, and were later discharged.

Some students living in the building complained that there were no fire escape in the building, a claim that was refuted by the dormitory administrator.
