2 Nigerians, 1 Nepal & 4 Bangladesh sentenced to 5 days imprisonment for residing in North Cyprus illegally

A Famagusta court has sentenced seven foreign nationals including 2 Nigerians, 1 Nepal and 4 Bangladesh to 5 days imprisonment for residing in the country illegally and to be deported after their prison sentence.

They were given the prison sentence on Wednesday.

The Nepalese national identified as Gyan Bahadır Mayan, who was arrested on Tuesday was found to illegally reside in the country between March 21, 2018 and June 12, 2018, after he was brought into the country with preliminary leave to work as a gardener in the country.

The defendant told the court that his employer did not pay for him, expressing that he was the victim.

The Bangladeshi defendants, are said to be students in a university in Gazimagusa and entered the country through the Ercan airport.

The Nigerian defendants were found to be illegally residing in the country since March 7, 2017.

The court judge, evaluating all the points brought before him, said it was a pity that the court had to carry out the legislation in this direction noting that it was not possible for the defendants, who could not renew their preliminary resident permit and records because of financial issues to continue to reside in the country without their legal status.

He then convicted the defendants of the offenses they committed and sentenced them to five days' imprisonment and ordered an investigation to be carried out on their employer.

The defendants will be deported after serving their sentences.
