UN urges restart of Cyprus negotiations

Deputy Spokesman for the United Nations Farhan Haq has urged both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities to return to the negotiating table. There was a need for both parties in Cyprus to come back to the table, he said.

We’re trying to see what can be done to bring them back, Haq said.

He added, however, that the UN was not considering the appointment of a special envoy at this particular time.

Haq also pointed out that Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bintou Keita will be visiting Cyprus from 9 to 11 May where she will review the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) ongoing progress in the implementation of the recommendations Security Council-mandated review of the Mission.

Haq added that Ms. Keita, during her visit to Cyprus, will also meet with United Nations officials, as well as relevant stakeholders on both sides of the island, representatives of the diplomatic community and civil society.
