Prisoner who escaped from hospital yet to be found, two people arrested in connection with the escape

Two men have been arrested on suspicion that they aided the escape of convicted arsonist Yılmaz Gümüş who escaped from the hospital last week.

Gümüş aged 45, who was arrested last week, managed to escape while at Kyrenia State Hospital and has not been found since then.

The two men who are believed to have helped him escape, have been remanded in custody by Kyrenia District Court.

Gümüş, who had been convicted of causing the deaths of three people in Stoke Newington, North London in 2003, was handed three life sentences in 2005. He requested to be extradited to Turkey to serve his sentence but he managed to escape from a Turkish prison in 2015 and has been hiding in Cyprus since then.

Police have stepped up security at the border crossings and have asked anyone who spots him to call 155.

He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and dark coloured trousers.
