Two students sent to prison for 3 months by a Girne court pending their trial

The Girne criminal court has sentenced two student to three months in prison for robbery.

The accused who are Zimbabweans were reportedly caught with stolen goods.

Police say the two suspects were arrested  after they were caught with stolen good in Boğazköy following a three-month search by a private team formed within the Girne Police Department.

Delivering judgement, Mesut Mesutoğlu said the suspects had no legal status in the country, ordering them to be sent to the Central Prison for three months as unconstitutional detainees.

Police witness testified in court that the two suspects were responsible for breaking into shops at night and robbing from shop to shop.

Police said they have been following the suspects closely since December 2017 after they were linked to several robbery incidents in Girne.

Police say the suspects were identified and arrested in two different apartments in the Lavinium Site in Dikmen.

According to police report, a total of 21 , 980 TL worth of electronic equipment such as TV, mobile phone, laptop computer, mobile phone, thousand TL cash money were found at the residence of the suspects.

Police say they accepted their crime and gave voluntary testimony stating that investigation into the incident has been concluded.

Police investigation revealed that one of the suspect had dropped out of school after registering with a university in Lefkosa for the 2016-2017 academic session.

Police persecutor requested that the suspects be held in custody, drawing attention to the possibility of them leaving the country illegally so as to escape trial.

They will be tried in three months time.

Recall that eight students were initially arrested in connection with the robbery incident, but five were later released after they were found innocent.
