Syrian illegal immigrant arrested in Famagusta, police after two others and human traffickers
A Syrian national has been arrested by the TRNC police for entering the country illegally by hiding in a cargo ship from Mersin, Turkey to North Cyprus.
The suspect identified as Ragab Diban, was arrested by the TRNC police on Tuesday night and taken to court on Wednesday where he was ordered to remain in police custody for two days why investigation continues.
According to police report, Ragab Diban entered the country illegally by hiding in a cargo ship from Mersin.
He told police that he was a refugee escaping from war in Syria and had paid $3,500 to a Syrian human trafficker in Mersin to help him get to south Cyprus to work and according to him, there were two other people with him.
Police investigation revealed that the suspect arrived at the Famagusta port by a cargo ship from Mersin on Tuesday February, 27.
He is said to have boarded the cargo ship without conducting any immigration proceeding and was not detected at the TIR dock in Mersin.
He was arrested on arrival at the Famagusta port and voluntary confessed to the crime.
Police said they were looking for the other two illegal immigrants and human traffickers.
