Africans protests killing of Senegalese in Italy

Africans in Italy on Tuesday marched through the streets of central Florence  chanting "no more racism" after a Senegalese street vendor was shot dead by an Italian man earlier in the day.

According to report from Florence, the gunman identified as Roberto Pirrone had fired six shots from a pistol at close range, killing Idy Dienec as he sold leather bags, umbrellas and trinkets on a bridge in the Tuscan city, one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations.

Following the incident, dozens of Africans living in the city took to the historic centre of Florence, to protest the killing, knocking over trash bins, motor scooters and large flower pots.

The shooting comes a day after a parliamentary election in which politicians often portrayed migrants as criminals and called for mass deportations.

According to Reuters, police say the murder was not racially motivated, citing testimony from the suspect who gave to investigators following his arrest.

Investigators said, the suspect who had a licence to carry a weapon for sport, was suicidal and lashed out in a state of confusion.

Last month a man with neo-Nazi sympathies and ties to the League opened fire on African migrants in the city of Macerata, wounding six before he was captured.
