TRNC ‘bar association’ condemns threats against judge
The North Cyprus ‘bar association’ has condemned the threats made against the
judge handling the case of six people facing charges in connection with
an attack against Turkish Cypriot daily, Afrika.
According to reports on Friday, a team of lawyers and the head of the ‘bar association’ Unver Bedevi stood outside court saying justice should be allowed to run its course.
The office of Turkish Cypriot daily, Afrika was attacked on Monday January 22 over an headline published by the news paper the previous day criticizing Turkey’s operations in Afrin region of Syria.
President Erdogan who was incensed by the publication had called on Turks living in North Cyprus to take necessary response.
The protesters who destroyed parts of Afrika’s offices also protested in front of the Turkish Cypriot parliament.
The six accused arrested in connection with the incident were brought to court but denied the charges brought against them and are due to appear in court again next week.

We will not remain silent against these attacks on institutions and those who represent them, Bedevi said.
Those who incite separation and violence in the country, instead of learning from the serious consequences of their actions and apologising to society, have the nerve to threaten the judge and attack lawyers.
